Promotion of Shellfish Aquaculture
Over the past year we continued to encourage, support and promote shellfish aquaculture as an ideal "green" industry for Martha’s Vineyard. In November we sponsored a presentation on the potential for Vineyard offshore mussel culture by Dr. Richard Langan, Director of the University of New Hampshire Open Ocean Aquaculture Program. Following up on the interest generated by the presentation, we have applied for grant funding to identify potential offshore culture sites as a first step to develop an industry that may provide product and employment for fishers displaced by the decline of wild stocks.

Mussel Culture Initiative In the wake of the diminished wild fish stocks, the development of an economically and
environmentally sound mussel aquaculture industry in the off-shore waters of
Martha’sVineyard promises to provide
alternative marine-based employment opportunities for Vineyard fishers.

Creating a Tetraploid Broodstock for the Bay Scallop The goal of this project is to improve the commercial feasibility of bay scallop aquaculture in the Northeast United States through the application of tetraploid technology. The objective is to produce faster-growing, marketable triploid bay scallops with large adductor muscles without the use of chemicals through the development of tetraploid broodstock.
